Walks & Waves - La Atalaya

This trek takes place in the area of La Atalaya, in the municipality of Santa Brígida, about 20 minutes from Las Palmas and nestled in the hills of the island’s north-central region.

Here, the landscape transforms: leaving the coast behind, you enter a land of deep valleys, terraced farms, and wind-sculpted volcanic formations. It’s a historically rural area, known for its tuff quarries and inhabited caves like the striking Cuevas del Gato, which dot the red rock and offer a glimpse into an ancient way of life still visible today. The trail winds through native plants, prickly pears, agave, dry-stone walls, and wide views over the Guiniguada ravine and the distant ocean.

Soon we’ll stop in the shade for a delicious picnic. This trek, though easy, is full of charm and atmosphere, lasting around 3–4 hours including breaks—perfect for discovering an authentic Gran Canaria, far from the crowds.

ITINERARY:

Personalized pick-up

Between 8:00 and 9:00 AM, we’ll pick you up directly from your hotel, apartment, or accommodation.

We drive to La Atalaya, in the Santa Brígida municipality, the starting point of our hike.

Our hike begins in one of the island’s most charming villages, known for its tuff quarries and ceramic tradition. From here, we head out along a trail that leads us through cactus, aromatic plants, and volcanic rock.

The trail gently climbs, offering spectacular views over the northeast coast and Santa Brígida. The landscape alternates between arid vegetation and Mediterranean scrub.

We reach the Cuevas del Gato, ancient caves carved into the stone and used for centuries as homes or shelters. A silent, evocative spot, perfect for seeing the simplicity of life in isolated dwellings.

We stop in a shaded area to enjoy a freshly prepared picnic: authentic flavors, fresh ingredients, and a relaxing break in nature.

The final stretch leads us past old terraced fields and stone walls, silent witnesses of a still-living rural tradition. The trail brings us back to La Atalaya with a privileged view over the village.

After the hike, we head to the coast for a refreshing ocean swim – the perfect reward.

After cooling off and relaxing, we’ll take you back comfortably to your hotel or apartment in the late afternoon.
